Two men who police say tried to swindle people using dyed dollars have been charged with acquiring property under false pretenses in a case that prompted a massive response by police who believed the men had dangerous chemicals Wednesday afternoon.

Afamdi Enechuku, 36, of Yendon, Pa., and 29-year-old Kardor Duo, of Minneapolis, were involved in what Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police spokesman Robert Fey called the Nigerian Black Money Scam. Duo is still in jail under $10,000 bond. Enechuku was released on bond early this morning.

In one version of the scam, a person shows a victim money covered with a black coating or a stamp, preventing the cash from being used. Using a solution, the scammer gets the black ink off. He then shows the victim a briefcase or container filled with what appears to be thousands or millions of dollars, claiming he needs money to buy more of the chemical.

In another version, a person tries to convince a victim that he can transfer some of the ink from one bill onto a blank sheet of paper turning one bill into two or three.

According to the police report, Enechuku and Duo demonstrated turning paper into U.S. currency for the victim Wednesday.

When police caught up to the men Wednesday , one had unknown liquids that officers believed could be flammable or hazardous. Officers called in the bomb squad, the hazardous materials team and also evacuated the seven-store strip mall on N. Graham Street. They also closed off Woodward Avenue for several hours.

Police found a bag they believe was ditched by the suspects that contained blue and black slips of paper cut in the size of U.S. currency.
