MANILA, Philippines -- The most dangerous among men is one who uses the law to destroy innocent people, Chief Justice Renato C. Corona said over the weekend as he addressed lawyers and future law practitioners in Pampanga with a reminder to keep their conscience in check.
The Chief Justice said the most dangerous among men ''is the man who knows the law, but has no conscience, for he holds in his hands the power to destroy not only innocent people but also the very society he pretends to protect.''
Corona spoke at the graduation of law students of the Angeles University in Angeles City last Saturday, during which he was conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the university, led by its president Atty. Joseph Emmanuel L. Angeles.
The Chief Justice, who also just recently was conferred his doctorate on Civil Law (D.C.L.) with the honor of summa cum laude by the University of Santo Tomas (UST), said that being a man of the law is a moral responsibility.
''Your legal education has placed squarely a heavy moral and social responsibility to impart justice to those who cry for it. As defenders of the rule of law, your obligation is to give each man his due. To do otherwise is to allow evil and injustice to trample on the rule of law,'' he added. In his address to the law graduates, Corona said that as future law practitioners they ''should always choose conscience over and above what is expedient and momentary.''
He said lawyers must give each man his due because ''to do otherwise is to allow evil and injustice to trample on the rule of law.''
Corona, who also holds an honorar y Doctor of Laws degree from the Bohol University, said the essence of wisdom is ''to be wise rather than merely intelligent; to be good rather than merely accommodating; to value happiness rather than mere transient pleasures; to be wealthy rather than to be rich; to be men of the law rather than to be mere lawyers.''
