This is a scam format that is being seen recently. It a form of extortion and it is now getting the attention of law enforcement.

It seems that the people sending these are using free servers that they can hide behind, they think. The email accounts are shut down very quickly.

I recently got the same email, and it came right after I had emailed a politician, so my guess is their system is compromised and spamscamers are getting the email lists.

There are many ways that scammers get mailing lists. They may simply be using an extractor program to pull them out of the internet. Also, if you signed a guestbook somewhere and left your email then you could get onto a scam mailing list.
