Nine people arrested in St James lottery scam raid

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Nine people have been arrested on Reasonable Suspicion of Breaches of the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transactions) (Special Provisions) Act 2013 after a team of officers conducted an intelligence-led operation in Rose Heights, St James on Thursday, January 8.

According to the Major Organised Crime & Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA), the operation targeted three premises in the community, where the occupants were reportedly involved in lottery scam, among other illicit activities.

During a search of the premises, a number of electronic devices were seized, including three laptop computers, a magic jack and several cellular phones. An LG Compaq Disc, books containing identity information and US$560 were also seized.

The lawmen report that preliminary examination of the laptop computers and the LG Compaq Disc, revealed the presence of several Microsoft Excel files, among other documents, containing thousands of names, addresses, telephone numbers and the dates of birth of people apparently living overseas.

The electronic devices seized were secured and the relevant agencies to include the MOCA Cyber Forensic Unit will be engaged to facilitate further analysis.
