Wayne halts scam on 100-year-old

Jun 20 2007

Exclusive By Marc Waddington, Crewe Chronicle

A CREWE bank employee who detected a £76,000 theft from a 100-year-old woman has been honoured with a rare Crown Court commendation.

Wayne Proudlove, 22, of Sheringham Drive, was working at Barclay's when he was visited in September, 2006, by 100-year-old Gladys Jarvis and Stanley Nin, a 77-year-old financial advisor who had taken her to make a £10,000 cash withdr awal.

Wayne, a special constable since the age of 18, was concerned at the size of the withdrawal.

He had to hand over the money, but his persistence led to a police investigation which discovered that former millionaire Nin, of Sandbach, had systemically stolen more than £76,000 from the widow to invest in a Nigerian oil scam which had already cost him an estimated £400,000.

Judge Elgan Edwards issued the commendation during Nin's sentencing to a suspended 10 month jail term after his guilty plea to one count of theft at Chester Crown Court on Friday.

Wayne said: 'We had to give her the money, but I still wasn't happy so went to the police and the account showed he had been withdrawing thousands daily for about two months.'

Now, former Brine Leas pupil Wayne is looking to a career in the police force.

He added: 'I felt a bit guilty at first when the truth came out that we did not spot it earlier, but I'm glad he was caught.'

Wayne will receive the certificate next month.
