This is a message I got:

Name: vera howelt

Email: [lglg8201@gmail.com]

Message: Hello,

It is my pleasure to write you this note,i am Vera by name, from France coming to United state for some research program and studying of international relation, and i will need either a room or apartment to stay when i come,i just wanna know if the room/apartment you advertised is still vacant,if so please get back to as soon as possible so we start talking about the payment, and also update me the full details about the apartment...thanks in anticipation..hope to hear from you soon...

Vera

I meant to search her on facebook to see if she would be a good fit as a roommate but accidentally put her name in google. That was a fortunate mistake as this was the first website that came up! And this is for a private university in Minnesota, not sure how she even found the listings through the school website.

Vera Howelt is still out there.

I just posted an ad last night and within hours I received a response.
I have received posts from people like this before. I have trusted my gut and google them before contacting them.

I just got this email a few days ago from this email and an esther parker. They both talked the same "weird" way and i just KNEW it had to be a scam. I sent them a fake rental app to fill out and was going to have my father run a police report if i recieved it back. neither of them responded! Don't ever give out your info to these random people!

Says shes from France and wants to rent a room. Her apparent step father contacted me and said he was having a representative send the deposit. I see a scam in the works.

Victoria Roland

A few days after I told 'Vera Guillermo Howelt' not to contact me again, I got a message from from 'Victoria Roland,' allegedly a 'young Lady from Scotland'. Same scam, only slightly better use of the English language.

same here

I just exchanged some emails with Vera and here "step father". The responded to my ad on a private listing for off campus housing. I have no idea how they created an account to get access to the listing but I am contacting the web administrator to send out an alert to all the other property managers. Thank you very much for this post because I was about to fall for this trap. It is not uncommon to have students from abroad contact me about apartments but my curiosity caught me on this one. Thank you again. Chris

I got the "french vera guillermo" letter from the following email address:
" [lglg8201@gmail.com]". I know enough French to be suspicious of the English content of the letter - - claiming to be from a student. So I googled the email address. It's good to have this forum. Here's the text of the email verbatim :

Thank you

Both Vera Guillermo (lglg8201@gmail.com) and Morris Bower (mor_bower111@yahoo.com) have notified me and I have found they are con artists (without the creativity).

I'm sorry that so many of you have been duped by this scam. Thank you so much for posting about this as I was getting very frustrated with it. Should anything more happen, I think it best that the police be notified.

Thought something was up!

I have recieved the same emails this week from Vera from France. After receiving the second email telling me about herself, is when I thought something was up. She didn't answer any of my questions regarding the apartment. I came on Facebook and looked up both names and this came up. Thank you for posting this information.

I got the same nonsense for apartments in downstate Illinois. I can't figure where this scam is leading, though.

Same scam different name, same emails. They send you a check for too much and ask you to western union the difference back. The check is no good and you'll loose the money. Don't fall for it. I have reported it to FBI and so should you!
I got their payment after I refused to rent Vera my apartment. Now I haven't open the mail they sent to me yet. What shall I do next? Return the mail to the sender?

Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm thinking of reporting it to the police but I don't want to make things too complicated, as I encountered this incident when I was helping my friend subleasing her apartment when she's away. I just want to make sure that Vera or her stepfather won't use my info (name, address, cell number) for other purpose, and that I don't lose money in this accident.

Now I haven't open the mail, haven't deposit the check, haven't issue out any money yet. Can I simply send the mail back to the sender (It's sent from Centre Group Properties INC) and tell them that I reject any payment enclosed?

Thanks!

Skip the locals. They may not even know what this scam is. The FBI does. They may be able to track these guys down.

No, do not send the check back. Don't even communicate with those people. They want to steal money from you. Don't communicate with criminals.
